Natural factors
- Predominant soils: calcaric and cutric Cambisols (WRB/FAO 1998), slightly basic, with low organic matter content.
- The slaty hillsides of the Sistema Ibérico define the viticultural relief of the zone.
- Cold continental sub-Mediterranean climate (Köppen), with low rainfall, extreme winter temperatures, and prevailing northwesterly winds.
- Vineyards situated at elevated mid-range altitudes, a decisive factor in the climatic conditions to which they are adapted.
- The river Jiloca flows between the sierras of Cucalón/Oriche and Sierra Menera; the zone borders the endorheic lagoon of Gallocanta.
Human factors
- The earliest written reference to vineyards in the zone dates from the 12th century; municipal records of Daroca document wine production from 1581.
Terroir / wine link
- Basic soils low in organic matter, elevated altitudes, and northwesterly winds together shape the microclimate that moulds the character of the wine.
