Terroir
Natural factors
- The Júcar River carves a canyon that breaks the flatness of the terrain and generates higher rainfall than the surrounding area.
- Soils of lacustrine deposits over drained marshland, with silty sands and saliferous clays rich in organic matter.
- Poorly rounded polygenic gravels and pebbles, predominantly calcareous dolomite, cemented by clays.
- The DOP covers 7 municipalities in the south of Cuenca (Castilla-La Mancha), irrigated by the Júcar River. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- DOP recognised in 2003, with EU registration in April 2004. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- Reds ranging from cherry red to ruby red with blue and violet hues, low in astringency and soft on the palate.
- On the nose, complex fruit aromas; on the palate, a balance of acidity and tannin, with a savoury, rounded character.
Terroir / wine link
- The Júcar canyon generates higher rainfall than the surrounding area, linking the relief to the soft, balanced tannic profile of the reds.
