Natural factors
- The island's seismic origin has produced a varied soil composition; marine fossils embedded in the upland areas bear witness to its oceanic past.
- Vineyards extend from the hilly areas of Damatria, Theologos, and Fanoi to the slopes of Atabyros (~1,200 m), at elevations of up to 650 metres.
- North-westerly Aegean winds (their so-called 'eye') and maritime breezes from May through September moderate summer temperatures.
- Multiple microclimates are shaped by the massif of Atabyros, the aspect, and the altitudinal variation of the vineyards.
- Ρόδος enjoys the greatest number of sunshine hours in Greece, situated at the south-eastern tip of the country.
Human factors
- An ancient tradition of wine trade: Rhodian amphorae sealed with the image of Helios have been found throughout the Mediterranean.
- A pioneering system of 'sincere harvesting' applies strict qualitative selection criteria and low yields per acre.
Product characteristics
- The grapes develop high sugar levels at ripeness alongside satisfying to high acidity and distinctively expressive flavour and aromatic profiles.
- Each vintage is subject to a mandatory organoleptic assessment by an officially constituted panel before the ΠΟΠ Ρόδος designation may be granted.
