Natural factors
- The dominant substrate is Kimmeridgian (Upper Jurassic), capped on the higher summits by hard Portlandian limestones. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Soils consist of grey argilo-calcareous colluvium derived from the Kimmeridgian (alternating marls and limestone beds), with small stones that help warm the soil.
- A degraded continental climate, relatively cool owing to the northerly location and the proximity of the Plateau de Langres.
- The harvest is restricted to the commune of Les Riceys, on steep, elevated, sun-exposed slopes facing east and south, with pinot noir N as the sole permitted variety.
