Terroir
Natural factors
- Monferrato hills at 150–250 m above sea level, with convex slopes of 5–10% gradient and open V-shaped valleys.
- Moderately deep, calcareous soils with ancient silty-marnose deposits of marine origin.
- Low average rainfall (870 mm/year), concentrated in spring and autumn; scarce winds and breezes.
- Significant diurnal temperature variation during the ripening phase, with high summer temperatures.
Human factors
- DOC established in 1970 on the proposal of Senator Paolo Desana, with the zone centred on the hamlet of Cantavenna between the castles of Gabiano and Camino.
Product characteristics
- Ruby red in colour, evolving toward garnet; spiced and red-fruit aromas that shift toward ethereal notes with ageing.
- Good acidity and high tannin content ensure the wine's longevity.
Terroir / wine link
- Calcareous-marnose soils combined with low summer rainfall and marked diurnal temperature swings promote sugar accumulation, tannic structure, and ageing potential.
