Terroir
Natural factors
- A zone of mid-alluvial plain between the Oglio and Po rivers, at elevations ranging from 13 to 36 metres above sea level.
- Soils of Quaternary alluvial origin (Upper Pleistocene, Holocene), deposited by the Po and its tributaries.
- Three soil types: well-drained sandy-silty soils along the levees; sandy loam to clay loam soils between the ridges; clayey soils in the low-lying valley floors.
- Climate ranging from sub-humid to sub-arid: sultry and humid summers, autumn and winter fogs, harsh winters with late spring frost events.
- The first aquifer lies at a depth of 8 to 25 metres; the Po feeds a broad hydrogeological unit.
Human factors
- The Lambrusco Viadanese grape variety is native to this area and takes its name from the comune of Viadana (MN), where it is most widely cultivated.
- The vine is grown on alluvial soils reclaimed from the Po's floodplain, with viticultural roots traceable at least to the age of Virgil. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
- The Po's alluvial soils, with their varying particle size—sandy-silty along the levees, clay loam in the valleys—impart freshness and fertility to the wines.
