Terroir
Natural factors
- Elbe valley with granite-syenite massif: the Meißner Pluton reached the surface during the Lower Carboniferous and shapes the bedrock to this day.
- Cretaceous sandstone and Pläner limestone layers partly overlie the syenitic strata at considerable thickness.
- Ice-age deposits of Löss, clay, and river sand overlie the older strata; sandy soils predominate around Jessen.
- Continental climate with a pronounced diurnal temperature range; average 9.4 °C, 663 mm precipitation, 1,663 hours of sunshine.
- Vineyard sites on south-facing slopes (partly Steillagen) along the Elbe and its tributaries between Pirna and Diesbar-Seußlitz.
Human factors
- Viticulture in the Elbe valley documented since at least 929 AD; cultivation traditionally attributed to Bishop Benno von Meißen.
- Steillagen limit mechanisation and demand intensive hand labour to ensure yield stability and aromatic quality.
Product characteristics
- Diverse soils impart differentiated aromatic and bouquet compounds to Lagenweinen.
- Intensive vineyard management promotes natural minimum alcohol levels, aromatic expression, and acid harmony.
Terroir / wine link
- Diverse soils (Granit, Syenit, Sandstein, Löss) impart differentiated aromatic and bouquet compounds to the wines of specific Lagen.
