Natural factors
- Dominant granitic substrate, yielding decomposed granite and siliceous sands known locally as «grès» or «gore»
- Presence of Triassic sandstone on the flank of Mont de Bessay, producing very poor sandy soils overlying a schistose series
- Plots terraced between 250 and 380 m, exposed primarily to the east, within a single commune: Saint-Amour-Bellevue
- A degraded oceanic climate with continental and southern influences, marked by summer heat that frequently extends into autumn
Human factors
- AOC decree of 8 February 1946, championed by Louis Dailly and «l'Union des producteurs» during the 1930s (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- Age-worthy wines: deep purple to garnet robe, kirsch and spice on the nose, a rich and full-bodied palate
- Early-drinking wines: brilliant ruby robe, aromas of red fruits, flowers, and orchard fruits
