Natural factors
- Vineyard planted on ancient alluvial terraces and "montille" rises: very free-draining sandy-gravelly soils with low water-holding capacity.
- At the foot of the hillsides: argilo-calcareous soils of Turonian age (tuffeau chalk) and argilo-siliceous soils of the Senonian.
- Oceanic climate, warmer and drier than the rest of Touraine, with relatively low humidity.
- A wooded plateau to the north shelters the vineyard from cold winds, encouraging an early start to the growing season.
- The appellation is limited to the single commune of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, at the north-western tip of the Touraine vineyard area.
