Natural factors
- Soils with multiple pedological environments: arenaria (also mixed with calcare), alberese, galestro, and mixed-texture terrain.
- Elevation ranging from ~120 m a.s.l. along the rivers to ~650 m at Poggio Civitella; nearly square shape of ~15 km per side.
- Territory bounded by the valleys of three rivers — Orcia, Asso, and Ombrone — covering an area of 243.62 km².
- Mediterranean climate with continental characteristics; average annual rainfall ~700 mm, concentrated in spring and autumn.
- Mid-hillside zone free from fog and late frosts; frequent winds ensure good vine health.
Human factors
- The abbey of Sant'Antimo, founded by Charlemagne in the 9th century, stood along the via Francigena route and its monks produced wine.
- The DOC was established by Ministerial Decree of 18 January 1996, championed by producers to promote quality grape varieties appreciated by consumers.
Product characteristics
- Whites: straw yellow, delicate and intense aromas, full and harmonious palate.
- Reds: ruby, fruity aromas, full and velvety flavour; Vin Santo: amber, sweet and soft.
