Terroir
Natural factors
- Dominant soils: typical cambic chernozems, eroded cambic chernozems, and eroded soils on slopes
- Lithological substrate: Pleistocene loess-like loamy-clayey deposits and sandy loams rich in carbonates
- Viticultural soils with high calcium carbonate content and rich in iron oxides
- Predominant altitude of 145 m, south/south-west/south-east aspect, on the slope between Danube Terrace III and the Sălcuța upland plain
Human factors
- Documentary record dating to 1557: Pătrașcu cel Bun gifted 'the lands of Segarcea' to his daughter Maria, the vineyards and wines already being well known at that time
- DOC recognition granted by the Decree of 25 May 1929, alongside 27 other Romanian viticultural centres
Product characteristics
- White wines: straw-yellow with greenish highlights, aromas of acacia, elderflower, exotic fruits, and peach; on the palate, above-average citric acidity and a broad, lingering finish
Terroir / wine link
- Soils rich in calcium carbonate and iron oxides yield red wines with a brilliant colour, finesse, a distinctly marked personality, and good ageing potential
