Natural factors
- Zone located in the Sierra Morena Sevillana; municipalities: Alanís, Cazalla de la Sierra, Constantina, and Guadalcanal.
- Minimum altitude of 450 m; poor, stony, and frequently slate-based soils.
- Annual rainfall between 600 and 1,000 mm, with August and September dry, which prevents rot.
- Diurnal/nocturnal temperature range of ~18 °C in summer, promoting the development of polyphenols and balanced ripening.
Human factors
- Winemaking tradition dating back to the 15th–17th centuries: formerly a leading exporter of wine to the Americas, cited by Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Baltasar de Alcázar.
- Regulated in 2004 following a revival in the 1990s with new plantings, updated techniques, and a portion of the vineyard under organic cultivation.
