Natural factors
- Calcareous cover-sand soil with a buried meadow soil subsoil, locally interspersed with calcareous lösz patches; 75%+ quartz content confers phylloxera immunity.
- Kontinentális klíma: mean annual temperature 10–11 °C, ~2,100 sunshine hours per year, 500–550 mm annual precipitation.
- Flat lowland relief, 110–120 m above sea level, maximum elevation difference of 10–15 m.
- The temperature-buffering effect of Lake Soltvadkert regulates soil water reserves; shallow groundwater reduces vintage variation.
- The mineral content of the subsoil imparts a pronounced minerality to both the wine and the Pezsgő.
Human factors
- Soltvadkerti viticulture is rooted in the 18th century, having developed on sand dunes through the labour of settlers.
- Ezerjó: the defining local variety, used to produce still wine, Töppedt-grape wine, and Pezsgő alike, all by reductive winemaking.
Product characteristics
- Ezerjó wine: pronounced acidity, silky palate, harmonious acid-alcohol balance; when made from Töppedt grapes, a full-bodied, oily texture emerges as well.
