Natural factors
- The bedrock consists of andezit; on it, loamy to clay-loamy soils have developed, imparting higher mineralitu to the wines.
- The basin is of tectonic origin dating from the Neogene; its floor is filled with fluvial sediments, alluvial fans, spraše, and loessic loams.
- The climate is mild and dry: average precipitation 450 mm, 2,100 hours of sunshine per year, sum of active temperatures min. 3,100 °C.
- Grape ripening is accelerated by an elevated geothermal flux from brown-coal deposits in the vicinity of Veľký Krtíš.
- The finest sites lie on the southern slopes of the Krupinská planina and in the Ipeľská kotlina; vines are cultivated on south, SE, and SW aspects.
