The Portuguese regulator (IVV) does not distinguish principal vs accessory varieties — every authorised casta is listed together in the caderno de especificações.
Terroir
Natural factors
- The Tagus river is the primary shaper of the region's soils, while also exerting a moderating influence on the climate.
- The Serra de Montejunto and the Serra de Aires e Candeeiros delimit the region to the west and shield it from Atlantic influence.
- Temperate climate: average temperatures of 15–17 °C, approximately 2,800 hours of sunshine per year, and mean annual rainfall of 750 mm, concentrated in winter.
- In summer, the Tejo's body of water ensures cool, humid nights following hot days, reducing hydric stress in the vines.
Human factors
- Viticulture in Tejo predates the nation: the Romans introduced vine cultivation to the region, which came to play a leading role in its settlement.
- The selection of autochthonous varieties is a central human practice for preserving the regional character of the IG Tejo.
Product characteristics
- All IG Tejo wines — still, sparkling, and semi-sparkling — share an aromatic, fresh, and balanced profile with notable acidity.
- The influence of the Tejo guarantees cool summer nights, preserving natural acidity and creating a balance between acidity and alcohol that is the hallmark of the IG.
Terroir / wine link
- The cool summer nights, moderated by the Tejo river, preserve the natural acidity of the grapes, lending Tejo wines their freshness and acidity-alcohol balance.
