Terroir
Natural factors
- Mountain morphology with alluvial intermontane basins (Alto Tirino, Valle Peligna, Valle Subequana, Valle Roveto) where viticulture is concentrated.
- Frequent karst phenomena with discontinuous or absent surface hydrology, a consequence of the compact calcare structure of the Apennine ridge.
- Temperate mountain climate: mean annual temperatures 10–12 °C, peaks of 23–25 °C in July, precipitation approximately 800 mm/year distributed evenly throughout the seasons.
- Winkler Index between 1,600 and 2,000 degree-days (April–October), sufficient for the ripening of early and medium-late varieties.
Human factors
- Ovid (43 BC–17 AD), born in Sulmona, already references the viticultural fertility of Valle Peligna in the Amores.
Terroir / wine link
- The Winkler Index (1,600–2,000 degree-days) in the intermontane basins ensures optimal ripening of both early and medium-late varieties.
