Terroir
Natural factors
- Cretaceous geological formations: Selcifero Lombardo, Maiolica di Bruntino, Arenaria di Sarnico, Pietra di Credaro, Flysch di Pontida, and alluvial soils.
- Parent rocks of Cretaceous age (Mesozoic); predominantly eluvial soils, strongly tied to the underlying bedrock.
- Northwest of Bergamo, soils are scisto-argillosi; toward the east and Lake Iseo, soils are argillo-calcarei.
- Average annual rainfall of 1,100–1,200 mm through the late 1990s, with a significant reduction from 2003 onward; annual variation between 200 and 350 mm.
Human factors
- Viticulture in the Bergamo area is documented in Roman times, with references in Pliny and Caesar; some authors place its origins as early as the Etruscan period.
- After the abandonment during the barbarian invasions, the revival of viticulture centered on the communal era, with written sources from Pier De Crescenzi (1300) and Castelo Castelli (1398).
Terroir / wine link
- Eluvial soils with a scisto-argillosa matrix to the northwest and an argillo-calcarea matrix to the east produce distinct mineral profiles across the two main hillside macro-zones.
