Terroir
Natural factors
- Alpine zone (north of Menaggio-Bellano): predominance of ancient metamorphic rocks, with mountains often exceeding 2,000 m and glacial cirques.
- Pre-Alpine zone: near-total dominance of Mesozoic marine sediments — calcari, dolomie, and marne — with mountains generally below 2,000 m.
- Upper plain: a basement of late Mesozoic and Cenozoic sequences overlaid by Quaternary continental deposits.
- Lake Lario moderates the climate: +2 °C in winter and −1/2 °C in summer compared to the Po plain, with reduced fog and good ventilation from lake breezes.
- Abundant summer rainfall of Atlantic origin gives the lake climate more of an 'oceanic effect' character than a Mediterranean one.
Human factors
- Lake Lario generates a lacustrine microclimate characterized by reduced fog, consistent breezes, and average temperatures approximately 2 °C milder than the Po plain in winter.
Product characteristics
- The climate of the shores of Lake Lario is tempered by the lake: less fog, good ventilation from breezes, and winters approximately 2 °C milder than the Po plain.
- Pre-Alpine soils are dominated by calcari, dolomie, and marne of Mesozoic marine origin, while the Alpine zone is characterized by ancient metamorphic rocks.
Terroir / wine link
- The thermal effect of Lake Lario (−2 °C in summer, +2 °C in winter versus the Po plain) and the lake breezes modulate the viticultural microclimate of the appellation.
