Terroir
Natural factors
- Variegated geology: oligo-Miocene volcanic-sedimentary in the north-east, Plio-Pleistocene basalt plateaus, Paleozoic granitic-metamorphic basement.
- The Oristano plain is a tectonic graben filled by terraced detrital-alluvial deposits, the work of the river Tirso.
- Alluvial soils 'Bennaxi': deep, cool, silty-sandy matrix near the Tirso; 'Gregori': gravelly-clayey, poor drainage.
- Costa del Sinis: carbonate-rich soils; hydromorphic zones close to the sea with aquents and salorthids (saline soils).
- Coastal marine and aeolian dynamics produce extensive dune fields, ponds and lagoons, with sandy soils (psamments) in constant flux.
Human factors
- Viticulture documented as far back as the Nuragic era (~1200 BC): Vitis vinifera seeds and remnants of wine vessels recovered at Cabras, locality 'Sa Osa'.
