Terroir
Natural factors
- 36 communes (35 in the Landes, 1 in the Gers) surrounding the former bastide of Geaune, within a triangle formed by the Adour, Gabas, and Lées valleys
- Quaternary gravel sheets (the 'nappe de Maucor', 'nappe de Garlin', and 'nappe de Thèze'), overlain by loessic silts, with rounded pebbles colluviating down the slopes
- Oceanic climate: 900–1,000 mm of rain per year over 180 rainy days; easterly winds promoting intense summer heat but also carrying a risk of spring frosts (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Tannat N and cabernet franc N form the historic backbone of the red wines; tannat, being resistant to phylloxera, contributed structure, while cabernet franc provided finesse.
- The white variety baroque B, the principal white grape, grows alongside claverie B and chenin B ('cruchinet'), both present before the phylloxera and powdery mildew crises of the 19th century. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- Reds focused on fruit expression, with no ageing requirement: tannat contributes body, while cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, and fer add breadth.
- Complex whites with a balance of freshness and richness, dominated by white flowers and exotic fruit; baroque blended with gros manseng, petit manseng, and sauvignon. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
- Well-drained soils on well-exposed hillsides encourage freshness and fruit-forward aromas in the reds, rosés, and whites.
