Terroir
Natural factors
- Northern zone (Concarena alluvial fan): calcareous soils and soils of glacial origin, with a strongly pronounced diurnal temperature range.
- Val Grigna: bedrock composed of arenarie, conglomerates, calcare, dolomite, and metamorphic rocks (micaschists), on a territory of glacial origin.
- Southern zone (Lanzato terraces): heterogeneous, loose soils with variable calcare content; non-mechanizable vineyards with high maintenance costs.
- Proximity to Lake Iseo moderates the climate in the southernmost part: cool summer breezes and warmer winter breezes stabilize climatic conditions.
Human factors
- From the early twentieth century, Valle Camonica was among the leading Alpine zones for vineyard extent; every family cultivated on the terraces known as 'ruc' in the Camuno dialect.
- Viticulture on non-mechanizable terraces was a widespread family tradition, entailing high maintenance costs for the dry-stone walls.
Terroir / wine link
- The breezes off Lake Iseo moderate the climate in the southern zone (Piancamuno–Darfo), rendering it more stable and favorable for viticulture.
