Terroir
Natural factors
- The geological substrate is dominated by Pliocene marine sediments, with sands prevalent at higher elevations and marine clays on the slopes.
- Slopes facing the Chiana valley rest on Early Pleistocene continental sediments, with paleosols exhibiting high cation-exchange capacity.
- A north–south-oriented hillside band between 250 and 500 m elevation, with a mean Winkler index of 1,900° (1,750° at higher altitudes).
- Mediterranean climate with dry summers: average annual rainfall of 690 mm, with peak concentration in October–November.
- The thermal drop in September (below 20 °C) favors aromatic and phenolic development in the grapes after the August peaks (above 25 °C).
Human factors
- Pliny the Elder mentions two local wines: Talpone (red) and Ethesiaca (white), produced in the area around Cortona, Montepulciano, and Arezzo.
