Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils of red calcareous-clay earth with skeleton content up to 60% of total constituents, rich in potassium.
- Vineyards situated between 280 and 418 m a.s.l. (an altitudinal range of 138 m), in the southern part of the Murge plateau.
- Hot, arid climate: rainfall of 400–800 mm/year, concentrated 70% in autumn and winter; summers are frequently rainless.
- Temperatures rarely exceed 30°C or fall below 0°C; summer minima seldom drop below 18°C; prevailing exposures are south-easterly.
- Karst landscape on calcareous bedrock, delimited by dry-stone walls built from local stone that retain the agricultural soil of the vineyards.
Human factors
- Viticulture documented as far back as the Magna Graecia period in the area of Egnazia, with the Bianco d'Alessano variety among the most widely cultivated.
- Traditional training systems: alberello (20%), modified alberello on trellis (50%), counter-trellis (30%).
Product characteristics
- White wines: citrus, honey, and white flower notes; red wines: a fruity profile of red fruits with a good balance of acidity and sugars.
- White passito: mature fruit preserve, honey, and apricot; red passito: ripe red fruits with spiced notes that develop with ageing.
Terroir / wine link
- The red calcareous-clay soils, rich in potassium and with a 60% skeleton content, promote aromatic synthesis, sugar concentration, and natural drainage in the wines.
