Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils classified as Typic Palexerult (Ultisol) and Cutanic Alisol (Ferric), unique among the viticultural soils of Castilla-La Mancha.
- Soils with low Ca (10.4 g·kg⁻¹) and high Si (345.9 g·kg⁻¹) and Fe (26.5 g·kg⁻¹), unusual when compared to the calcareous viticultural soils of the region.
- Extreme pH variation between horizons: up to 4.1 units within a single profile (pH 8.9 in the Ap horizon and 4.8 in the Btg1 horizon).
- The Bullaque river and the Sierra shield the area from northerly winds, creating a microclimate that moderates seasonal temperature extremes.
- The elevation of the zone produces a marked diurnal temperature range and higher rainfall than the rest of the region.
Product characteristics
- Aromas of Mediterranean scrubland (cistus, heather), balsamic notes (thyme, rosemary, lavender), and minerality (black slates, quartzites), with a lingering bitter finish that lengthens the aftertaste.
- Outstanding tannic structure, rounded and seamless, with polyphenols >50 meq/l and color intensity >10 a.u., well suited to oak ageing and extended cellaring.
Terroir / wine link
- The high acidity and low pH of the Raña impart a bitter edge to the finish that lengthens the wine's aftertaste.
