Terroir
Natural factors
- Miocene and Quaternary soils, brown, low in humus, with limestone; slightly alkaline due to calcium carbonate.
- Temperate dry Mediterranean climate with continental influence; mean temperature 12–14 °C and annual rainfall of 390 mm.
- Exposure to warm south-easterly winds prevents spring and autumn frosts, unlike in the Rioja Alta.
- An average of 2,221.84 hours of sunshine per year; July, August, and June are the sunniest months.
- Soils with low water availability in summer and no impermeable horizons; well-balanced structure of sands, silts, and clays.
Human factors
- The harvest is late; technicians and growers use ripeness monitoring from one month before harvest to determine the optimal picking date.
Product characteristics
- Wines of balanced aroma and high sugar concentration, with the low acidity inherent to the climate.
- Production is possible in dry, off-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet styles, using white varieties only. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
