Terroir
Natural factors
- A Paleozoic granitic-metamorphic core with Mesozoic calcareo-dolomitic outliers forms the rounded reliefs of the south-western Sulcis.
- The coastal plains derive from scree deposits, alluvial material, and mixed lagoonal sediments (sands, silts, carbonate accumulations), reclaimed during the twentieth century.
- Vineyard soils comprise entisols, inceptisols, and alfisols with illuvial carbonate hardpans at depth, indicating a high degree of pedological development.
- Mediterranean climate with a mean annual rainfall of 500 mm distributed over approximately 55 days, concentrated in autumn–winter and spring.
- Winter temperatures rarely fall below zero (mean annual minimum 12 °C); summer temperatures reach up to 40 °C; mean annual maximum 22 °C.
Human factors
- Viticultural tradition dating back at least to the eighth century BC, with the Phoenicians founding a port city at Porto Pino in 750 BC.
Terroir / wine link
- Highly varied vineyard soils (entisols, inceptisols, and alfisols with illuvial carbonate hardpans) reflect the lithological complexity of the Sulcis plain.
