Terroir
Natural factors
- Low-hillside silty soils over argille horizons, with slower drainage: they encourage vigour and higher yields.
- Mountain climate with wide diurnal temperature ranges and intense solar radiation, conditioning the late ripening of the grapes.
- Megalithic terraces at Varchignol (Valle Antrona, Montescheno): dry-stone walls, stone staircases, and integrated drainage and irrigation systems on a south-facing slope.
Human factors
- From 1345, the Statuto di Villadossola fixed the start of the vendemmia on 29 September (Feast of St Michael), to ensure full ripening in the valley.
Terroir / wine link
- On upper-valley slopes, well-drained, skeleton-rich sandy soils favour quality viticulture with low yields and short pruning.
