Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils formed from pyroclastic deposits (fall, flow, or resedimented volcaniclastic), with andic properties linked to primary volcanic glass materials.
- Raw mineral soils over lapilli and ash from the 1944 eruption; the volcanic sandy texture promotes permeability and shields the vines from phylloxera.
- Temperate Mediterranean climate: ~550 mm of annual rainfall, concentrated in spring and autumn; prolonged summer drought offset by relative humidity above 65% and abundant dew.
- Cold air currents from the Matese and the Irpinian mountains generate significant diurnal temperature variation, promoting acidity and longevity in the wines.
- Lava soils of extremely high permeability absorb all precipitation; drainage is ensured by the deep ravines carved into the flanks of the volcano.
Human factors
- Own-rooted vines on the Vesuvian volcanic soils, never affected by phylloxera; unproductive plants are replaced using the ancient technique of layering (propaggine).
- Viticultural presence documented from the 18th century BC; the Villa Augustea of Somma Vesuviana (2nd century AD) is the largest winemaking site of antiquity known to date. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- Still white wines: straw-yellow color with greenish highlights, a savory, fresh, and aromatically intense profile on the nose.
- Base wines for sparkling: grapes harvested early to favor acidity and freshness over sugar accumulation, resulting in a naturally low alcohol starting point.
Terroir / wine link
- Volcanic sandy soil combined with aspect preserves acidity — an ideal base for fresh, low-alcohol sparkling wines well suited to refermentation.
