Terroir
Natural factors
- Basaltic substrate (of volcanic origin) dominant in the western and northern hill zones.
- Sedimentary marine limestone substrate widespread in the central-southern zone and in the Colli Berici.
- The mountain ridges to the north screen cold winter winds; the Colli Berici to the south moderate warm air currents from the Po Plain.
- Average summer temperatures of 22.9 °C with peaks in July; autumns characterized by marked diurnal temperature variation.
- Well-drained soils owing to their loose texture, promoting balanced vegetative and productive growth in the vine.
Human factors
- DOC established in 2000, rooted in a millenary viticultural tradition updated with techniques from Conegliano and S. Michele all'Adige.
- Modern viticulture developed through research trials conducted by the Stazione Sperimentale di Conegliano and the institutes of Conegliano and S. Michele all'Adige.
Product characteristics
- Reds: ruby evolving to garnet with aging, red forest fruits or ethereal notes (Pinot nero), well-structured and polyphenol-rich.
Terroir / wine link
- Basaltic soils (of volcanic origin) to the west and north, limestone (sedimentary marine) soils in the central-south and in the Colli Berici: geological diversity selects grape varieties according to their vocational suitability.
