Terroir
Natural factors
- Volcanic soils derived from stratified tufi of the Monti Cimini (late Pliocene) alternate with alluvial deposits of the Tevere.
- Pyroclastic rocks (ashes and lapilli) have been superimposed over marine argille and sands of the Tevere valley.
- Temperate transitional climate: annual rainfall 954–1166 mm, mean temperature 14.2 °C, winter minimum 1.9–2.9 °C.
- Pliocene and Pleistocene marine sediments in the plains of the Tevere, with the older argillaceous lithotypes exposed in the low-lying areas.
Human factors
- Viticulture documented from at least the 4th century BC: discovery of a Faliscan red-figure stamnos depicting Dionysus in the necropolis of Molesino.
- The Statutes of Soriano (1447) and of Gallese (1576) already regulated by law viticulture and wine production in the territory.
Terroir / wine link
- Ciminian volcanic tufi overlying Pliocene marine argille and sands: the superimposition of pyroclastites on marine sediments defines the subsoil of the vineyards.
