Natural factors
- Vlaanderen lies at the northern boundary of the wine-growing region, where a cool climate prevails with very fresh nights.
- The proximity of the North Sea ensures milder winters and prevents excessively low temperatures that would be detrimental to the vine.
- The northerly location delivers more hours of light during the ripening period than in more southerly wine-growing regions, and guarantees a sufficient level of acidity.
- Cool autumn nights slow the breakdown of acids in the grapes and limit the presence of tannins in the wine.
- The cool climate produces grapes with a low sugar content and therefore fresh wines with a low alcohol level.
Product characteristics
- White Vlaamse landwijnen: natural acidity, low alcohol content, a light flavour structure and aromas full of finesse.
- Red Vlaamse landwijnen: fruity and full of finesse, with few tannins and a low alcohol content.
