Natural factors
- Two climatic influences converge: Atlantic (rainfall) and pannonisches Klima (hot days, cool nights).
- Cool downslope winds from the Waldviertel create pronounced diurnal temperature variation in the lead-up to harvest.
- Soils: Urgestein weathering predominates; post-glacial windblown sand formed Löss deposits on east-facing slopes.
- The Donau moderates temperature extremes, buffering high daytime temperatures and harsh winters.
- Steep terraced vineyards with heat-retaining dry-stone walls create numerous distinct microclimatic zones.
Human factors
- Stone terraces were already constructed during the Middle Ages to cultivate the steep slopes along the Donau.
- Löss deposits formed through post-glacial windblown sand accumulation in the lee of the Urgestein hillsides.
Product characteristics
- Riesling on Urgestein: citrus fruit aromas (lemon, grapefruit); Grüner Veltliner on Löss: tree fruit (apple, pear), full-bodied and substantial.
- Pronounced temperature swings produce high acidity in white wines; red wines display fruity, tannic styles.
Terroir / wine link
- Urgestein → citrus notes in Riesling; Löss → tree-fruit aromatics in Grüner Veltliner.
