Terroir
Natural factors
- The geographical area extends across the Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Gironde, and the western part of Lot-et-Garonne, bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean for 250 kilometres.
- The temperate oceanic climate, influenced by the major rivers and the warm Gulf Stream current, features mild, wet winters and warm, dry, sunny summers with approximately 1,950 hours of sunshine per year.
- The maritime mildness, carried by the tides rising up the estuaries and the prevailing westerly sea winds, is felt more than one hundred kilometres inland from the river mouths.
- Three soil types favour the vine: brown clay-limestone soils over a limestone substratum, leached silty-sandy boulbènes soils, and alluvial soils of gravel, clay, sand, and silt on the river terraces.
Human factors
- The first harvest under the PGI took place in 2006, with the vins de pays de l'Atlantique forming the foundation of the new segmentation of production basins.
Product characteristics
- The wines produced are supple, fruity, and aromatic, a character that may be preserved in partially dealcoholised wines.
