Terroir

• The IGP covers nine départements in eastern France corresponding to the territory of the former Rhône-Alpes Region, a recognised wine-producing area.
• In the Ardèche, wind exposure is pronounced, with the Mistral blowing from the north-east, the vent du midi coming from the south, and westerly winds carrying moisture.
• In the Rhône département, two geological sectors separated by the Nizerand present, to the north, granitic rock breaking down into more or less acidic clay-sand soils capable of curbing the vigour of gamay, and, to the south, calcareous hillsides that are sometimes schistose, where the wine profiles are more refined.
• In the Savoyard sector, the vineyards are planted on hillsides between 250 and 600 metres in altitude, with annual rainfall exceeding 1,000 mm and an average of 1,600 hours of sunshine per year.

• The regional vin de pays Comtés Rhodaniens was recognised in 1989, built upon local productions such as the IGPs Drôme, Collines Rhodaniennes, Coteaux du Grésivaudan, Isère, Vins des Allobroges, and Ardèche.

• The alternation during summer of warm days and rather cool nights allows the grape varieties to reach full ripeness while retaining suppleness, freshness, and fruitiness.
