Terroir
Natural factors
- The vineyard extends across 23 villages in the triangle formed by Faugères, Pézenas, and Béziers, occupying the catchment basin of the Thongue, a tributary of the Hérault.
- The most characteristic soils include gravelly Villafranchian terraces, sandy and gravelly marls, lacustrine limestones, and clay-limestone soils.
- The vines are planted mainly between 50 and 100 metres in altitude, on ancient alluvial terraces and fans, glacis, limestone plateaux and hillsides, or sandy-silty molasse hills.
- The Mediterranean climate is characterised by mild winters, hot and dry summers, and average annual rainfall that does not exceed 600 mm.
- The prevailing winds are the Tramontane, a dry, cold wind that disperses cloud cover, and the marin, a humid wind that, by contrast, brings clouds and can sometimes be very violent. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
