Terroir
Natural factors
- A large part of Drenthe consists of Pleistocene deposits with a fine sandy cover and boulder clay (keileem) within 120 cm of the surface.
- In the northeast and east, on the border with Groningen, and in the southwest of the area, raised bog occurs as a soil type.
- A sand ridge runs from Emmen to Groningen and rises several metres above the surrounding surface, formed during the Ice Age.
- This sand ridge consists mainly of coarse to fine sand and weakly saline clay, locally referred to as potklei.
- The climate has an average annual rainfall of 861 mm, 1,550 sunshine hours per year measured at Eelde, and an average annual temperature of 9.4°C, with 16.4°C in summer.
Terroir / wine link
- The climate makes it possible to achieve the stated yields and ripeness levels, which is expressed in a fresh white wine with green aromas and red fruit in the red wine.
