Terroir
Natural factors
- Along a broad strip following the coast in the north and west of the area, marine clay deposits are found, while in the southwest the soils consist of marine clay overlying peat.
- Peat occurs as a soil type scattered across the centre and south of the area.
- To the east, cover sands (dekzanden) occur, with or without boulder clay (keileem) near the surface.
- The Wadden Islands consist mainly of dunes and fine marine sands.
- The climate has an average rainfall of 848 mm per year, 1,655 sunshine hours per year in Leeuwarden, and a mean annual temperature of 9.7 °C, rising to 16.6 °C in summer.
Product characteristics
- The level of grape ripeness achievable under this climate results in a fresh white wine with green aromas, while the red wine is characterised by red-fruit aromas.
