Principal grape varieties

Terroir

• The westernmost massifs of the Alpine section are calcareous (Chartreuse, Vercors, Dévoluy), while those further east are granitic (Belledonne, Écrins).
• The Bas-Dauphiné rests on a substrate of Tertiary molasse derived from Alpine erosion, partially covered by Quaternary moraine formations that create elongated hills ranging from 700 metres in the east to 300 metres in the west.
• To the north, the Île Crémieu forms an elevated limestone plateau between 400 and 450 metres, its slopes cleared of moraine deposits.
• Annual rainfall is around 900 millimetres and sunshine totals approximately 2,050 hours per year, with a mean annual temperature of close to 12 °C in Grenoble.
• The region is fairly windy, with the Bise (northerly wind) and the Vent du Midi (southerly wind) being the dominant winds.
• In the Trièves, the vineyards are situated at altitudes between 500 and 900 metres on slopes with exposures ranging from south-east to south-west, and the area experiences very large diurnal temperature ranges.
• In the Coteaux du Grésivaudan, the vineyard has developed with a principal south-east exposure on glacial terraces and highly free-draining argillo-calcareous scree deposits.
