Terroir
Natural factors
- In the winegrowing region, Devonian rocks predominate, including quartzitic sandstones, quartzites, and argillaceous schists, which were folded into the Rhenish Slate Massif during the Carboniferous period.
- Only in the upper Moselle area do Muschelkalk and Keuper rocks occur, having formed there as calcareous marine deposits of the Trier Bay, partly associated with terrace deposits or loess loam.
- The areas under vine lie at elevations of approximately 65 to 375 metres above sea level, with the vineyards averaging 180 metres above sea level.
- The vineyards are mainly oriented south-east, south, and south-west, with the highest solar radiation values recorded on steep and very steep sites.
- The mean annual daily average temperature is 9.7 °C, rising to 14.1 °C during the growing season, with average annual precipitation of 760 mm, of which 60% falls during the growing season.
