Terroir

• Vineyards on semi-mountainous terrain at elevations of 400–650 m with slopes of 10°–20°, cut through by numerous ravines.
• Limestone-based soils with thin, impoverished topsoil — the archetypal substrate for austere viticulture.
• Maritime climate with westerly winds; warm and humid summers, relatively mild winters.
• Mean annual rainfall of 386.7 mm, concentrated mainly from December to March; the remainder of the year is almost entirely dry.
• Mean daily sunshine of 9.3 hours and a mean daily temperature of 18.2 °C (1991–2005).

• The variety Ξυνιστέρι dominates, accounting for 76% of the planted area, followed by Ντόπιο Μαύρο at 11.9%.

• Limestone bedrock and poor topsoil define the soil substrate of the vineyards.
