Natural factors
- The Líladas river has created alluvial deposits and serves for winter flood irrigation (submersion) of the vineyards.
- μεσογειακό κλίμα with a mean annual temperature of 18.4 °C and rainfall of ~1,193 mm, concentrated between October and April.
- Strong north-easterly winds in winter; light to moderate winds in spring and summer.
- Vineyards on flat αλλουβιακά plains and on hillside slopes (Afrátion area), at elevations above 10 metres.
Human factors
- Viticulture in the Lílanto Plain documented since Homer; the Abantes settled in Euboea between 2100–1900 BC.
- The Lílanto Plain was the cause of armed conflicts between the Chalcidians and Eretrians (760–720 BC) owing to its agricultural importance.
