Terroir

• The geographical zone lies within a landscape of four cuestas in the eastern Paris Basin, namely the côte de Meuse, the côte de Moselle, the côte infraliasique, and the côte de Lorraine.
• This cuesta relief results from erosion by rivers and watercourses acting on hard layers of limestone and sandstone alternating with soft layers of marls and clays dating from the Mesozoic.
• The territory benefits from a dual climatic influence: continental, responsible for occasionally damaging frosts and favourable summer sunshine, and oceanic, bringing regular rainfall with limited thermal contrasts from one season to the next.
• The vineyards are situated either on the cuesta scarps and outlier hills, or on the dip slopes of the four cuestas, these landforms offering protection from the humid oceanic influence and shelter from the prevailing winds.
• A wide open aspect in the landscape prevents the pooling of cold air, thereby reducing the risk of frost and optimising the sunshine received by the vineyards.
