Terroir
Natural factors
- The geographical area extends across 42 communes in the Var département, bounded by the Gapeau and the Réal Martin to the west, the Argens to the east, and the Mediterranean to the south.
- The vineyard revolves around the crystalline Maures massif, whose Hercynian relief presents east–west-aligned ridges forming well-sunlit hillsides particularly suited to vine-growing.
- The vineyard often rests on Permian soils of the depression bordering the massif, consisting of sandstones and mudstones of a characteristic violet-red colour derived from erosion at the close of the Primary era.
- The Mediterranean climate records average rainfall of around 900 mm per year, concentrated mainly in autumn and between winter and spring, with sunshine hours reaching up to 3,000 per year.
- The Mistral, a violent cold northerly wind, together with the easterly wind, are the dominant wind regimes of the geographical area.
