Terroir
Natural factors
- The geographical area of the IGT Narni encompasses the municipalities of Attigliano, Giove, Penna in Teverina, and parts of the territories of Alviano, Amelia, Calvi dell'Umbria, Guardea, Lugnano in Teverina, Montecastrilli, Narni, Otricoli, Sangemini, and Terni.
- The terrain ranges from moderately to steeply sloping, with a geological character dominated mainly by Pliocene marine clays, alongside volcanic materials, travertine, calcareous tufa, and alluvial deposits.
- The area presents slopes ranging from 5 to 60% depending on the substrate, with markedly different consequences for the occurrence of land-instability phenomena.
- Soils developed on the lacustrine deposits between Collescipoli and S. Faustino are generally stone-free, with typically medium to high depth and cambic B pedogenetic horizons characteristic of Inceptisols.
- Mean annual rainfall ranges between 800 and 950 mm, with minima of around 600 mm as recorded in 2007 and peaks exceeding 1,000 mm as in 2010.
- The summer months are characterised by sparse rainfall, with a mean of 102.3 mm, lower than that of other parts of the region, where the average figure stands at approximately 160 mm.
- In August, particularly after the 15th, mean rainfall in recent years has not exceeded 10 mm, with conditions sometimes involving a complete absence of precipitation.
Human factors
- The pre-Roman settlement of Nequinum was conquered by the Romans in 299 BC through the betrayal of two local individuals who allowed entry through the city walls, subsequently becoming a Roman colony under the name of Narnia.
- The IGT Narni was established by Ministerial Decree of 18 November 1995 to valorise an area falling within what was then the DOC Colli Amerini, today known as Amelia.
- Ciliegiolo was vinified and marketed as a varietal wine by the Cantina dei Colli Amerini from its founding in 1975, first as a nouveau-style wine and later as a vintage wine.
- The traditional vine-training systems of rows married to elm trees have almost entirely disappeared, replaced by specialist palmette-trained plantings with spacings of 3×2 or 3×3 metres that spread widely in the late 1960s and 1970s.
