Terroir

• The wine region (vinorodna dežela) of Podravje stretches from the eastern foothills of the Pohorje massif to the Lendava Hills in an east–west direction, and from the Austrian to the Croatian national border in a north–south direction.
• To the south lie the Haloze Hills with the Dravinja Hills and Maclje, which are considerably steeper than the Slovenian Hills, making the use of standard agricultural machinery without terracing almost impossible.
• In the far north-east of Slovenia lie the Prekmurje Hills, which are characterised by the most gently undulating relief among the geographical units of this wine region.
• Most vineyards grow on soils developed on soft carbonate rocks, where the genetic soil sequence comprises rendzina, brown saturated soils, brown eutric soils, and leached soils; the majority have lost their natural morphology through deep ripping (rigolanje) and have been mixed into a uniform anthropogenic P horizon.
• On Pleistocene and Pliocene loams, hydromorphic soils of the pseudogley type predominate; on loams with quartz gravel, acidic brown soils occur; and on the acidic bedrock of the Pohorje massif, ranker and skeletal acidic brown soils are represented.
• Surfaces at elevations between 220 and 600 metres above sea level are considered absolute vineyard sites, as sites lying at lower altitudes are exposed to the risk of frost.
