Terroir
Natural factors
- The wine-growing area extends between Bingen and Bonn, with the adjacent Siebengebirge, over a length of approximately 110 km along the Mittelrhein valley.
- The valley floor is narrow, and only at 200 to 220 metres above sea level does the tight gorge valley open out into a plateau valley with its older, levelled terraces.
- The vineyards of the Upper Mittelrhein valley are predominantly south-east to south-west facing, while viticulture in the Lower Mittelrhein valley is dominated by sites with south to south-west exposure, with an average aspect of 168° SSE.
- Devonian rocks predominate, with widespread quartzitic sandstones and clay slate, as well as subordinate iron-bearing and chert nodule schists and quartzites.
- The mean annual temperature is 9.7 °C and the mean temperature during the growing season is 14.2 °C, with average annual rainfall of 665 mm, of which approximately 60% falls during the growing season.
- Tertiary rocks, including trachytes, trachytic tuffs, basalts, and latites as volcanic extrusive rocks, are found only in the area around Königswinter and bear witness to former volcanic activity.
