Terroir
Natural factors
- The vineyards are planted across a vast area of calcareous hills and plateaus, as well as the sands, gravels, and alluvial soils of the bordering plains to the east and south, at the edge of the Camargue.
- The strictly Mediterranean climate is characterised by very hot, dry summers, with the Mistral blowing from the north alternating with marine winds that can bring violent autumn rainfall events known as Cévenol episodes.
- Annual rainfall ranges between 600 and 750 mm, with significant variation owing to the stormy nature of precipitation.
Human factors
- It was during the Roman period, with the construction of the Pont du Gard aqueduct carrying water to Nîmes over 50 kilometres, that the first significant vineyard of the territory was established.
- Recognised as a vin de pays by decree on 16 November 1981, the vineyard area was extended in 2010 to incorporate 5 neighbouring vins de pays in order to reinforce the coherence of the PGI territory.
- The grape variety mix is divided between Mediterranean varieties suited to the driest soils and other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for reds, and Chardonnay and Sauvignon for whites, planted in deeper soils.
