- The appellation is divided into 2 zones separated by the Bertranges forest: the right bank of the Loire (west) and the hinterland around La Charité (east).
- Loire valley zone: hillside vineyards on Upper Jurassic (Oxfordian) limestone, with shallow clay-limestone soils containing a high proportion of stones.
- Hinterland around La Charité zone: bedrock of Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) limestone, with clay-limestone soils that are deeper and less stony than in the Loire valley zone.
