Terroir

• The greater part of the territory is pedologically characterised by the presence of lava deposits, typical of the various eruptive phases of the Roccamonfina volcanic complex.
• The remaining territory consists of soils of varying composition, namely clay-limestone, clay-sand, and medium-textured loam.
• The territory is predominantly hilly, with elevations ranging from 80 to 1,180 metres above sea level.
• During the period from 1921 to 1950, an average of 800–900 mm of rainfall was recorded annually, distributed mainly in the autumn–winter period.
• The area enjoys a mild temperature range, with extremes from minus 4 degrees in January–February to plus 37 degrees in August.
• The orography includes the slopes of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano to the south, and a mountain group with the summits of Monte Camino at 946 metres and La Difesa at 956 metres, oriented north–south at the centre of the area.
• On the border with the province of Isernia, the mountain ridge includes the summit of Monte Cesima at 1,180 metres and Monte Cavallo at 966 metres.

• The humanist Giannantonio Campano, born in 1429 in Cavelle, a village of Galluccio, sent as a gift to his friend the Cardinal of Pavia some local grapes described as sound and vigorous.
• The cultivation of Aleatico in Galluccio dates to the seventeenth century, when the noble Tuscan family of the Velluti of Florence acquired the fief and planted the first vineyards of this variety.
• With Aleatico, Duke Velluti/Zati produced in Galluccio what was known as Vin Santo, which was sold in Florence as a Florentine wine to considerable acclaim.
• The red wine of Conca has enjoyed a certain more recent historical renown, cited in earlier texts and noted from the 1960s onwards in several publications by Luigi Veronelli.
