Terroir
Natural factors
- At the start of the 21st century, the vineyard extends across communes along the Durance axis south of the Gapençais or the Embrunais, notably Tallard, Châteauvieux, Valserres, Remollon, Théüs and Espinasses.
- All the vines are planted above 600 metres in altitude, which marks the specificity of the wines and makes the Hautes-Alpes the department with the highest vineyards in France.
- The soils derive from Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks, foothill areas of schistous ground, and alluvial deposits with rolled pebbles in the Argentiérois, offering water regimes, stoniness and porosity favourable to the vine.
- Average annual temperatures are in the range of 9° to 11°C in the winegrowing area, with wide day-night temperature swings favoured by the altitude, low cloud cover and dryness of the air.
- Embrun is one of the sunniest towns in France with 2,484 hours of sunshine a year, while the area records an average of 101 days a year with frost. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
